<OtherAbstract Type="PIP" Language="eng"><AbstractText>With the development of oral contraceptives (OCs) cases of gingival inflammation and other oral side effects have been reported outside of pregnancy.  4 case studies of women with gingival changes who were using OCs are presented; symptoms include red and swollen gingiva, engorged and hypertrophic interdermal papillae, maxillary and mandibular marginal hyperplastic gingivitis, and radiopacites of the mandible.  In addition to gingival changes some OC users may develop altered salivary rates and localized osteitis following mandibular third molar extractions.  Studies involving animals have shown similar changes, altered bone format and resorption of bone during hormonal treatment.  It has been suggested that hormones may alter the microvascular component of the gingiva, affecting the tissues' response to bacterial plaque or that changes are caused by the mast cells in the connective tissue; at any rate changes seem to occur on a cellular level.  The practicing dentist should be familiar with OC side effects in counseling his patients.</AbstractText>
